Autocross is a form of racing that emphasizes safe competition and active participation. It is a timed competition where drivers navigate, one at a time, through a temporary course marked by traffic cones, rather than racing on a track with other cars. Autocross places more emphasis on car handling and driver skill than on sheer horsepower. To that end, cars are segregated into various classes to level the playing field.

Speeds in Autocross are slower, in absolute terms, when compared to other forms of racing but the activity level, measured in discrete turns per minute, can be higher than even Formula One due to the large number of elements packed into each course. Negotiating one lap of an Autocross course typically takes 40 to 70 seconds. Speed, in the majority of our events, does not exceed 40 mph.

A new course is created for each event so drivers must learn a new course each time they compete. Prior to driving the course, a competitor walks around it, taking mental notes and developing a strategy to be refined on subsequent runs. Everyone takes a practice lap and then one or more timed laps during which he or she try to go as fast as possible without hitting any pylons or losing control of the car.

Autocross is safe, challenging, and fun. It gives you a chance to improve your driving skills and gain respect for your well-maintained and great handling Corvette.

The Lone Star Corvette Club has a very active Autocross group that participates in events throughout the year. For dates and times, "Click" on the Club’s online "Event Calendar" button.

The Lone Star Corvette Club monthly autocross is held at Brookhaven College. Brookhaven is located at 3939 Valley View Lane (Valley View Lane and Alpha Road) in Farmers Branch. We race on parking lot P2, which is the lot to the southeast of the campus. Setup begins at 8:30 am and racing begins racing at 9:30 or so and usually completes before 2 pm. A link to the Brookhaven campus map is: Brookhaven Campus Map.

We typically race on the third Saturday of each month but you should check the club calendar for the exact dates. A donation of $25 is charged for each car driven to cover the cost of the clubs insurance. Please try to bring exact change.

At the end of the racing season, awards will be given to the top drivers based on total points scored by the drivers during the season. Scoring is based on a handicap system (PAX factor) developed by the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America). This handicap system allows us to adjust the run time of each car based on the capabilities of the individual car. We multiply the drivers raw time by the handicap factor to determine an adjusted run time and corresponding placement of each driver. Three points are awarded for a first place finish, two points for second place finish, one point for a third place finish. One point is awarded to each driver who participates. A first place finish would net the driver four points for a given race. Ties in total points will be broken by first considering most participation points, then best time in heads up races and finally the numbers of times the driver placed.

Our insurance requires us to operate under some new rules. A summary of the rules is:
  • Anyone who drives the autocross course must be a member of the Lone Star Corvette club, have a valid driver's license, be 17 or older and have current insurance policy on the vehicle that will be driven on the course.
  • Cars driven on the course must undergo a technical inspection prior to racing. The inspection consists of observing there are no obvious fluid leaks, the battery is tied down, wheel bearings and suspension are solid, and there are no other obvious safety related issues.
  • Drivers and passengers must wear helmets when they are in a car on the course. Our insurance allows DOT approved helmets or better such as Snell (K, M and SA) rated helmets. Note: If you would ever want to drive in an SCCA or Equipe Rapide sanctioned race, you have to wear a K, M or SA Snell rated helmet with a manufacture date within 15 years of the current date.
  • Everyone who attends the event (drivers, passengers and spectators) must sign a waiver of liability. A copy of the waiver form can be viewed or printed using the button at the top of the page.
  • Spectators do not have to be a club member. They must remain in a designated spectator area and are not allowed in the pits. No minors under the age of 17 can be in attendance.
  • Brookhaven College requires us to operate under a few rules contained in a contract we signed with the college. Those rules are: no smoking or lighting of matches or other flames except in designated smoking areas, no controlled substances, no illegal drugs, no drug paraphernalia, no alcohol and no weapons (including CHL holders).
